Hotel Gabbia D'oro, Verona
A marvellously central Verona hotel - the Hotel Gabbia D'oro lies on Corso Porta Borsari in Verona, the very heart of the old town, where medieval Verona lies cradled by the bend in the River Adige. This northern Italian city is very ancient - the tribes of the Euganei, and the Cenomani had established a city here in the sixth century BC, and so strategically important was it that it became a Roman municipium.
The Arena di Verona, the astonishing Roman amphitheatre which lies at the heart of the old city, was the third biggest in Italy when it was constructed in 30AD. Crowds of 25,000 would pack in to watch the games. It says much about the weight of history in Italian life that the Arena is still in use, 20 centuries later. These days, the crowds squeeze in on summer nights to hear Verdi, Rossini and Mozart performed under the stars. Other Classical sights in the town include the Arco del Gavi and the Porta Borsari. There is superb medieval architecture such as the Basilica di San Zeno Maggiore, and some beautiful Renaissance palazzi. The old centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so important is it culturally and architecturally, and the main hub of town is the Piazza delle Erbe - a meeting and market place.
Rooms at this Verona hotel are doubles and suites. There is free WiFi internet access throughout, and the hotel serves a good buffet breakfast each morning. The bedrooms here have air conditioning, TV and radio, minibar and phone, telephone and safe.
