Pozzuoli itself, apart from being the birthplace of Sophia Loren is the gateway to the Campi Flegrei, the 'fiery fields', so called because of the volcanic activity in the area. With volcanic craters and hot springs these are the Phlegrean Fields of Classical mythology, immortalised in the writings of Homer and Virgil as 'the entrance to Hades' but also as the Elysian Fields, an area of great beauty. You can be in Naples in 20 minutes, or you can walk in the crater of the semi-extinct Solfatara volcano, with steam jets escaping from underfoot, and sulphurous fumes emitting from the 'fumaroles' ... rather like an open-air sauna! This is also a good stopping-off point for the islands, with regular ferries to Procida, Ischia and Capri.
