Hotel Griselda, Saluzzo near Cuneo
Corso Xxvii Aprile ,13, SaluzzoThe magnificently named Hotel Griselda lies on Corso XVII Aprile, right in the heart of Saluzzo - an ideal base for exploring all this historic Piemonte town has to offer. The magnificent Monviso mountain gazes down upon a city that, in the Middle Ages, was an independent state under Ludovico I and his successors. In the late 1400s, Ludovico II drove the first tunnel through the mountain - an astonishing engineering achievement for the time.
Other sights in and around the town include the twelfth century Cistercian Abbey of Staffarda and the Castle of Manta. In the upper part of the old town lies the Casa Cavassa, a Renaissance building housing the municipal museum, with period paintings and furniture. The French Gothic church of San Giovanni has 14th century frescoes, sculpture from the Lombard school, and the tomb of the enterprising Ludovico (who died in 1504). Castello Via Griselda leads up to the Belvedere - a 16th century villa with a terrace yielding amazing views of the Alps.
Rooms at this Saluzzo hotel are singles and doubles. Each has a minibar, air conditioning, phone, TV and bathroom with shower. All public and private spaces in the hotel are non smoking. There is a bar, free parking, rooms and facilities for disabled guests, and a 24-hour front desk.
The city of Turin/Torino is some 45 kilometres north of here, with the Italian and French Rivieras around 95km to the south. The French border is 45km west of here, while to the east you have the Langhe hills, a centre for superb wines and cuisine, and centred around towns including Asti and Alba - a quite stunning part of Italy.
