Hotel Grotta Azzurra, Norcia

This Norcia hotel is in the centre of town, just ten metres from the main square. Norcia is in south-eastern Umbria on a wide plain near the Monti Sibillini, a sub-range of the Apennines and close to the Sordo river, which itself flows into the Nera. The town is very popular with hikers, hunters and climbers, and the local wild boar (hunted here) is famed throughout Italy. Norcia is also renowned as the birthplace of Saint Benedict, the founder of the Benedictine monastic order; Norcia's basilica is dedicated to the Saint.

The Hotel Grotta Azzurra, Norcia began as an inn run by the Bianconi family in 1850, and the same family are still running it today. The building has 16th century rooms with cross vaulted ceilings, and because of the age of the rooms, they all differ in small ways, meaning that some have jacuzzis, some have balconies, but all are traditional Italian-style lodgings. This three-star hotel overlooks the town on one side and the Sibillini mountains on the other; and guests can dine at the well known Il Granaro del Monte restaurant, which serves local cuisine.

Each of the 40 rooms is slightly different, but many have balconies with views of the town and the mountains. The rooms have recently been restored, and all are air conditioned for your comfort with en-suite bathroom facilities which include a shower, toilet and bidet, with a hairdryer also included. There is a desk provided for any work you may have to do, and there is a modem, private telephone and Sky/cable television to make sure that you can stay in touch should you want to. This hotel in Norcia is in a great central location so that you will be able to see all that the town has to offer as well as all the sights of Umbria and central Italy.
