Hotel Guerrini, Venice
For centuries, visitors first sight of Venice was the Cannaregio sestiere (or district) as their boats navigated the Canal of the same name into the Serene Republic. Today you will arrive by boat or car, and this conveniently located Venetian accommodation is just minutes away from the rail station at Santa Lucia and the car/bus terminal at Piazzale Roma.
The Hotel Guerrini is situated on Cannaregio's main street, which at this point is called Lista di Spagna. This is a building and location knitted deeply into the historic fabric of the city - the road was created by the earthing-in of a former canal during the seventeenth century. Because of its location, many countries built their embassies to Venezia here, and the street took its name from the consulate of Spain.
This humble building became an hotel (under the ownership of the Mazzo family) in 1938, and was then extensively improved during the 1960s. It's a continuing process of improvement that continues to this day, yet without ever losing the charm and the traditional of this lovely old building. Though rooms now boast private bathrooms, direct phones and central heating, the hotel is still recognisably a traditional Venetian albergo. Some rooms have a super view of the Campo San Geremia, others of the quiet Calle Procuratie. There is a choice of single and double rooms, the front desk is open 24 hours, and there is a lounge bar and internet access.
