Hotel Isola Di Mozia, Marsala
This brand-new three-star hotel is just 6km from the centre of the wine city of Marsala, and located close to the Riserva Naturale dello Stagnone (the lagoon nature reserve). The latter is a wonderful place to watch the local wildlife, including the many rare bird species that nest in the salt pans of the area. The Hotel Isola de Mozia, Marsala, takes its name from the ancient little Phoenician island of Mozia in the centre of the lagoon, and it can be reached by boat or hydrofoil, or when the tide is low, on foot via a centuries-old walkway. Mozia is certainly worth a visit - the home of a remarkable civilisation, with the ruins of everything down to the harbour and cemetery, it also contains a helpful museum telling the story of its most famous inhabitants. Salt has been collected in this area for centuries, and the white salt dunes and shimmering salt pans make a striking contrast with the strong blue of the sky. Pay a visit to the local salt museum (just 500 metres away) to learn more about the history of this industry.
The Hotel Isola de Mozia itself has a pretty arched facade and comfortable air-conditioned rooms, with refrigerated minibars, satellite television, baths, hairdryers and safes. Guests can enjoy a drink in the bar, take some exercise in the swimming pool, or enjoy a Finnish sauna. There is a garden and outdoor play area for children, and a shuttle service runs between both the local and the Palermo airport.
