Ravenna became the Roman capital almost by accident in the year 402AD. That was when a panicking Emperor Honorius, fearing the ever nearing Goths, fled here with his court from threatened Milan. It became the main Roman port, and Milan's loss was Ravenna's gain as it acquired the buildings that now form Ravenna's World Heritage Site.
