Ravenna became the Roman capital almost by accident in the year 402AD. That was when a panicking Emperor Honorius, fearing the ever nearing Goths, fled here with his court from threatened Milan. He was wise - the Goths swept south through Italy, taking Rome in 410, but completely ignored the little Adriatic port of Ravenna, sitting among the salt marshes and completely off the beaten track. It became the main Roman port, and Milan's loss was Ravenna's gain as it acquired the buildings that now form Ravenna's World Heritage Site. They are unmissable sights during your stay at this Ravenna hotel. The eight buildings, centred around the Basilica of San Vitale, and including the Neonian Baptistery and the Mausoleum of Theodoric, sit to the north west of the city centre.
Here you'll also find the main museum. Ravenna also has important medieval churches and an 11th century cathedral, the tomb of Dante Alighieri, who fled from Florence to write his Divine Comedy here. Ravenna is now landlocked, with the sea having receded several miles since Roman time. It's reached by canal, which runs straight through the marshlands and lagoons of the coast to reach Marina di Ravenna, a lively seaside resort. This Ravenna hotel puts both beach fun and high culture on the menu.
