Hotel Kennedy, Sant'Alessio
Via Nazionale 87, Sant'AlessioSicily's Hotel Kennedy sits in an enviable position right on the waterfront in downtown Sant'Alessio, on the island's eastern coast. This reasonably-priced three-star hotel has 83 simply furnished rooms, each complete with air conditioning, in-room safe, telephone and satellite TV. This Sant'Alessio hotel also boasts its own private beach and a lively discotheque, though the bright lights of Taormina's nightclubs and bars are never far away. There is also a good-sized swimming pool and various communal areas where guests can enjoy a drink with friends or curl up with a book to relax. Staff on the hotel's helpful 24-hour reception will assist with laundry, transfers to the airport or in simply recommending where best to sample local specialities such as freshly caught squid.
This part of eastern Sicily is home to the hugely popular resort of Taormina, the seaside town which captivated writer DH Lawrence so much in 1920 that he made his home here for three years. With great beaches and a bustling nightlife, Taormina is certainly worth a visit, but the smaller town of Sant'Alessio, just 12 kilometres up the coast, is ideal for those who want to experience the beauty of the Ionian coast in a more sedate environment. The Parco dell'Etna, where visitors can see the world-famous volcano of Mount Etna, is also close by. Because it is so unpredictable, tourists are no longer allowed to get very close to the volcano's main crater, but even from a distance, the heat and smoke it spits out never fail to fascinate the tourists. This hotel in eastern Sicily gives you a great vantage point from which to see it all.
