The largest of the Aeolian Islands, lying in the Tyrrhenian Sea off Sicily's northern coast. With a permanent population of 11,000, numbers almost double during the summer. The Aeolian Islands are volcanic of course, and Lipari was thrust up from the bed of the Mediterranean, probably in an eruption around 9000BC. Today the volcanoes are deemed inactive, though steam still gushes forth from the island's fumaroles. For thousands of years the island has been famous for the production of pumice and obsidian. Repeatedly invaded by Arabs, Saracen pirates, the Normans, Angevins, Aragon and then Barbarossa, the town was eventually protected by huge fortified walls in 1556. These, which stand atop the old Greek walls, are still in place today.
