Hotel La Gioconda, Florence
Named after Leonardo da Vinci's enigmatic Mona Lisa, this attractive three-star hotel in Florence (Firenze) is strategically placed between Piazza Santa Maria Novella and the city's mainline train station, and Piazza del Duomo. The hotel is so named because in 1913 the priceless painting itself was recovered here, having been stolen from the Louvre museum in France some time previously. All the major sights are within easy walking distance and there are plenty of restaurants and trattorias in the vicinity.
The hotel itself is a handsome, historic building tucked away in a quiet side street, whilst being close to the very centre of Florence. There are 25 comfortable en-suite rooms, all simply furnished and with direct-dial telephone, colour television and air conditioning.
