The Pollino national park is one of the largest in Europe and Castrovillari is the perfect base. It sits some 360 metres above sea level and can trace its roots to Roman times, though the 'modern' town was largely created by Spanish invaders who swept over southern Italy in the Middle Ages. They built the huge castle (the Castello Aragonese) in the town. Other sights in Castrovillari are the Franciscan convent, the church of Madonna del Castello, the Church of San Giuliano and the Ponte della Catena (Bridge of the Chain), which links the two halves of the city. Castrovillari occupies a marvellous natural arena, framed by mountains such as Pollino (2248m) and Dolcedorme (2273m).
