Santa Margherita Ligure, sitting on the sweeping gulf, has been dubbed the 'pearl of Tigullio' and is just five kilometres from Portofino. The nearest big city is Genoa, 35km from here. Originally the Roman town of Pescino, Santa Margherita fell to the Lombards, the Saracens and to Genoa in its long history. It was raided by Venice in 1432 and by the Turks in 1549. Its more recent history has seen it developing as a friendly tourist town since World War II.
