In the centre of Rapallo, Hotel La Piazzetta is just 50 metres from the sea and 150 metres from the railway station. Beautifully renovated, this accommodation has terrific views of the main square in Rapallo.

Rapallo itself, set on the Tigullio Gulf between Chiavari and Portofino, was first a magnet for writers and artists who were drawn by the remarkable beauty of the bay. DH Lawrence, Max Beerbohm, Friedrich Nietzsche, Ezra Pound and Ernest Hemingway were all visitors. Holidaymakers followed, and the Rapallo of today boasts some superb restaurants, bars and cafes, and chic shopping. None of this has detracted from the charms of old Rapallo however. Little cobbled streets unwind behind the Saline Gate (the only remaining gate of the old town walls), and there are fine old churches and palazzi, and the ruined 13th century Monastery of Valle Christi.

This Rapallo hotel is on the top floor of the piazza's highest building - great views then from the windows of its nine guest rooms. Rooms are single, double, quadruple, or are two-room apartments sleeping six. All are air conditioned with shower room and TV. The dining room is on the north of the building, with wonderful views, and wonderful Ligurian cuisine too. The hotel has arrangements with two of the longest established bathing areas on the promenade - you can spend long afternoons relaxing in the sun, in your deckchairs, while trained staff entertain the children.
