Hotel La Vedetta, Livorno

The Hotel Le Vedetta, situated on the hills outside Livorno, gazes onto one of the loveliest landscapes on the whole Tuscan coast. This is a building with a wealth of history behind it - built in 1700 by Baron Herman de Schubart, the minister of the King of Denmark, as his private residence. Schubart called it 'Vedetta' or 'lookout', reflecting the superb panoramic view you can enjoy from the huge terrace of the house.

And the Baron chose his spot well: the villa is within easy reach of the riches of Tuscany, including Siena, Pisa, Florence and Lucca (even easier with the advent of the motor car of course). 15 minutes in the car and you are at the port and the ferries out to Corsica and Sardinia. Other villas were built here on the slopes of Montenero, enjoying breathtaking views that enchanted many visitors, including Byron and Shelley.

Today, Vedetta is a superb three-star hotel in Tuscany.
