Arezzo has a history lost in the mists of time - it was a city of the ancient Etruscan civilisation which was swept aside by the Romans, some 500 years BC. The Romans prized Arezzo's location on a dominating hill, overlooking the four valleys of the Valdarno, Valdichiana, Casentino and Tiberina below.

The relics of this long history are everywhere to be seen. The climb up from the gates of the city, along the main street of the Via del Corso, is a delight - passing through medieval buildings to the peak, the heart of the old town, and to the City Hall, the Duomo, the Palazzo Vasari and the main square of the Piazza Grande. Visitors who have seen the Oscar-winning movie 'La Vita e Bella' will recognise many of the locations, filmed here by local hero Roberto Benigni. Arezzo is best known for Piero della Francesca's stunning fresco cycle 'The Legend of the True Cross', commissioned by the Bacci family in 1450 to decorate the church of San Francesco. And the views from the old town, down the vineyard-clad slopes to the valleys below, are stunning.
