Hotel Le Terre Dei Cavalieri, Cortona
Set on the slopes that lead up to the medieval city of Cortona, this Tuscan hotel sits on a vast spread with a lovely swimming pool. Le Terre dei Cavalieri aims to marry all the modern comforts with the unspoiled charm of an old Tuscan estate.
The estate comprises an old farmhouse and a 'leopoldina' (the name for farmhouses built in the reign of the Grand Duke Leopold in the 18th century. The property was part of the major reclamation and draining of the Valdichiana valley, which took some 300 years, transforming swamp into fertile farmland. Completed in 1796, the facade of the property bears a coat of arms boasting its origins. Extensive buildings housed the many workers on the estate, with features including the old Torre Colombaia (or 'dove tower'). The owners have jealously protected the historical roots of the estate during the restoration, with plasterwork done in 'cocciopesto' (crushed brick and lime mortar), walls washed with lime paints, old fire places cleaned and left, cross vaults in the old byres restored and reinforced, and the pillars stuccoed.
A lovely old property in beautiful Tuscan countryside surrounded by nodding sunflowers, and with historic Cortona clinging tenaciously to the outcrop of mountain above - but what about the modern comforts? Rooms are deluxe double or triple, with suites for two or four guests. All are air conditioned, with a bathroom, satellite TV, hairdryer and complimentary bathroom products. All are bed and breakfast. The hotel has WiFi internet access, laundry, babysitting and meeting/banqueting facilities. There is the swimming pool of course, good walking and cycling and a golf course nearby.
