This budget hotel, set within a traditional Italian village building, is located in the town of Riomaggiore, which dates from the early 13th century and has a small beach and a harbour. The Hotel Locanda della Compagnia overlooks a pretty square which is the location for Our Lady's Church, built in 1871.

The village is the first in the Cinque Terre, a set of five villages overlooking the Ligurian Sea, where the traditional Italian way of life is still lived. The other villages, strung out along the sheer cliffs of the coastline, can be reached by train (the station is just 500 metres from the hotel) or on foot, using the well-maintained network of paths. La Spezia can be reached by train and this typical Italian town features a pedestrianised centre which offers a good selection of shops, cafes and restaurants. The town hosts the Museo del Castello which exhibits an interesting collection of Roman and pre-Roman artefacts, all of which were locally excavated.

Some of Italy's best known cities are within a day trip of the village, including Pisa, Florence and Genoa. For those that enjoy mountain scenery, the Apuan Alps lie inland, with the quarries that are famous for producing the fine Carrara marble, much favoured by Italian Renaissance sculptors.
