Right on the border between Tuscany and Liguria, the little town of Ameglia gives you two of Italy's loveliest regions for the price of one. The Hotel Locanda dell'Angelo has a superb setting too, close to the sea, yet among the green fields of the Fabbricotti farmlands - an area that has been cultivated since time immemorial. This is a countryside scattered with Roman ruins, including the remains of the Roman town of Luni. Ameglia lies 11km along the coast from La Spezia and 90km from Genoa (Genova).

This is a very special building, conceived by Vico Magistretti in the 1970s. The master Italian architect saw the building as a 'mirror' reflecting the white of the Apuan Alps and the blue of the Gulf of Genoa - the building of course lies betwixt the two. The interiors have been created with similar careful thought. Rooms have matching sheets, curtains, beds and tables, and the work of contemporary artists lines the walls. The atmosphere is elegant, sober and welcoming.

There are 30 guest rooms at this Ameglia hotel, from doubles and twins, to suites and junior suites. All have air conditioning, minibar, phone, TV and bathroom with shower and toilet. The hotel is set up for guests with disabilities and is also non smoking throughout. There is a very good restaurant, a bar, gardens, outdoor swimming pool and 24-hour front desk. The chef here harnesses the flavours of Liguria beautifully - a mix of sweet, sour, salt and bitter, and a perfect balance.
