Hotel Locanda Don Serafino, Ragusa
This four-star Sicily hotel is wonderfully located in the heart of the old part of Ragusa, the provincial capital of this south-eastern region. Ragusa Ibla, the lower town, was destroyed in the 1693 earthquake, completely rebuilt in Sicilian Baroque style and is now a bustling and charming warren of narrow lanes and eighteenth century facades, and the hotel is situated right in among them. This area boasts several such towns of Baroque-period splendour. Noto is considered the most beautiful. Also well worth visiting is nearby Siracusa, originally founded by the Greeks, where you can wander round the ruin of the ancient city of Neapolis and where performances are still held in summer in the Greek theatre overlooking the Mediterranean. Further along an enchanting coastline of ruins, sandy beaches and waterside caves, there is a famous colony of Greek temples at Agrigento.
Ragusa's Hotel Locanda Don Serafino benefits from having preserved much of the Baroque charm of the town. Its cellar restaurant charmingly reveals the original eighteenth-century walls. In summer, guests have access to a private beach at the Marina di Ragusa, 20km away. A standard double room here includes a buffet breakfast and the room is equipped with shower, fridge, minibar, cable TV, air conditioning and direct-dial phone. The hotel has a lounge/bar as well as the restaurant, a 24-hour front desk, express check-out, safety deposit boxes and its own parking area. There are also meeting and photocopying facilities and internet access points. For an individual and enchanting base in this captivating region on the island's south coast, this hotel in Sicily could not be bettered.
