The little town of Brunate, in Lombardy's Como province, is famous for its beautiful surroundings - on a clear day the Alps are clearly visible. A settlement of fewer than 2,000 souls, its numbers swell during the summer months, when visitors come to rent apartments and houses - attracted by its relaxed charm and proximity to the lakes (and easy access via the funicular of course).

You will probably fly into Milan, which is 50km to the south west, and a day trip into the city is a must. Other nearby towns include Cernobbio, Moltrasio, Albavilla, Laglio, Mendrisio and Lezzeno. But much of your time will be spent in and around the lake or enjoying some of northern Italy's most magnificent scenery.
