Made up of three separate buildings, Ischia's Hotel Lord Byron has tastefully furnished rooms with bathroom, telephone, and satellite television. Some rooms also have air conditioning and a balcony. In addition the hotel has two swimming pools, one of which is outdoors, while the indoor one is a thermal pool with water provided by the ancient underground springs for which the island is famous. In Forio you are close to the La Mortella gardens, one of Ischia's premier sights. Elsewhere there's the Aragonese Castle (Castello Aragonese), the most visited sight on Ischia, which was once home to poet Vittoria Colonna, a close friend of Michelangelo. The Villa La Colombaia, a cultural centre and museum dedicated to Luchino Visconti, is also not far away in neighbouring Lacco Ameno. This town is also home to the Museo Archeologico di Pithecusae, which contains Nestor's Cup, whose inscription is believed to be the oldest writing in existence. It's easy to see why Forio has attracted some illustrious visitors in its time, including Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen who lived here in the nineteenth century.
