Hotel Miramare, Cagliari

This little gem of a hotel in Cagliari is located inside one of the city's most elegant buildings, which has a long and interesting history. Originally an ancient palazzo, it lies close both to the mainline railway station and the bus station and is right opposite the harbour. Cagliari is Sardinia's main city and the centre of political, economic and cultural life on the island. Its location is lovely, set in the middle of the gorgeous Golfo degli Angeli and surrounded by small lakes and gently rolling hills. There is a rich mix of cultures on this island reflected by the city; the Castello area of the city centre has Spanish origins with influences from the Italian city of Pisa, while the more modern districts surrounding the central hill show their Ligurian and Piedmontese origins in their architecture and design.

Cagliari's Hotel Miramare has two lovely suites and 12 standard guest rooms, all comfortably air-conditioned and equipped with a private bathroom and colour television. In addition, all the rooms here have glorious views either out towards the bustling port or over the city. There are lots of attractive architectural features inside the hotel, including beautifully decorated ceilings and well-proportioned rooms, and a full English breakfast is included in the room rate. The style of the furniture is in keeping with the age of the building and includes elegant antiques from the beginning of the 20th century. A particularly attractive feature of the hotel is the internal glasshouse where the proprietor cultivates rare and beautiful orchids.

There is no restaurant as such within the hotel, but guests will find a wide choice of taverns, cafes and restaurants to suit every taste and budget within close proximity to the hotel. Friendly, approachable staff are on hand to make recommendations and point you in the right direction. The Miramare has a welcoming lounge/bar with an extensive drinks list and there is 24-hour service on the front desk. Other facilities include free parking in the hotel car park, a left-luggage and storage facility and mooring facilities for boats. Small, well-behaved pets are welcome.
