The legacy is an extraordinary collection of early Christian buildings - eight of them protected as a World Heritage Site and centred on the Basilica di San Vitale. Ravenna has some fine medieval churches, including the Baroque Santa Maria Maggiore, and a visit to the National Museum is a must. It was also the final home of the great poet Dante Alighieri, who fled turbulent Florence in the early 14th century, and finished his Divine Comedy in Ravenna. He died here, and the Tomba di Dante is a major landmark in the town. Family fun can be had at the nearby seaside resorts of Marina di Ravenna, Punta Marina, Porto Corsini, Casalborsetti and Marina Romea, and there is also the nearby (giant) Mirabilandia theme park.
