Hotel Nella, La Spezia
This recently-refurbished 3-star hotel in La Spezia is within easy reach of the train station and all the other attractions in the town centre. The town sits on the Golfo dei Poeti, so-named because of the many literary figures, from Byron to Petrarch, who visited its shores and described the landscape in their verse.
With its elegant palm-lined boulevards and lively merchant port, this is both a pleasant destination and a great base from which to explore other towns and villages in Liguria. Follow the coastline westwards and you come to the enchanting Cinque Terre villages, clinging precariously to the cliffside and interconnected by a network of breathtaking hiking trails. From La Spezia, you can take a scenic bus ride to Portovenere, on the southwest tip of the Gulf. This serene village has a striking 12th-century gateway and a church from the same period. There are three rugged islands just offshore from the peninsula, which can be viewed by boat and boast the Grotta Azzura cave as well as the picturesque remains of a Romanesque abbey.
The Hotel Nella, La Spezia is furnished in a traditional style, with terracotta-tiled floors and dark wood furniture. The rooms are all equipped with a private bathroom, as well as complementary toiletries, a direct-dial telephone and an English breakfast included in the room price. In the hotel's restaurant, you can sample traditional Italian cuisine, including homemade ravioli, vegetable fritters, and local meat and fish specialities. The hotel can organise live music for special events like wedding receptions or birthdays.
