The recently renovated Hotel Nuovo Centrale is in Camucia, in the heart of the Valdichiana and just 2km from the historic Tuscan city. The hotel offers a buffet breakfast, free parking, soundproofed rooms, accommodation for those of limited mobility, newspapers and safety deposit facilities. From here, the road winds up to historic Cortona, which perches high above Valdichiana's valley floor. The journey up is an adventure in itself, as you wend through terraces of vineyards and olive groves. Cortona itself seems to cling by its fingernails onto the vertiginous ridges of cliff. And walking the city is a delight, with the narrow, precipitous cobbled streets open to pedestrians but not to cars. Sights include the Museo dell'Accademia Etrusca, which maps the history of Cortona back more than 2000 years to Etruscan times. The Museo Diocesano features panels by Fra Angelico, while the cathedral (Duomo) rises upon the ruins of an old pagan temple, with a sheer drop to the valley beneath.

Cortona has excellent shopping and restaurants, and fine bars and cafes in which to rest during your explorations. From this lovely walled city there are spectacular views to lake Trasimeno and the Valdichiana below.
