Hotel Nuovo Russo, Trapani

This old four-star hotel is opposite the cathedral of San Lorenzo in the historic centre of Trapani, a vibrant port on the extreme western coast of Sicily. It's a great position for anyone wanting to explore this fine city, with its many baroque churches, and the fascinating Pepoli museum, which features a huge collection of decorative art, much of it made from the local coral. Situated on the main Corso in Trapani, with fine views of the city, the Hotel Nuovo Russo is also just 100 metres from the port, where you can get ferries or hydrofoils to the Egadi islands of Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo, plus the tiny island of Mozia - once inhabited by the Phoenicians, and containing the ruins of everything down to the harbour and cemetery. But perhaps the best day trip from Trapani is to the little hill city of Erice nearby, with its peaceful winding cobbled alleys and tucked-away churches, palaces and convents - it's not called the Assisi of the south for nothing. The ruined temple and theatre at Segesta, one of Sicily's finest ancient sites, are also easily reachable for a day out.
