Hotel Oriente, Lipari
The three-star Hotel Oriente is an intimate, welcoming hotel on the volcanic Aeolian Island of Lipari, off the coast of Sicily. With just 32 rooms, and plenty of communal space in the form of a conservatory and a veranda with large-screen satellite TV, it is the kind of establishment where fellow guests soon become friends. Each of the clean and airy bedrooms has en-suite bathroom facilities, air conditioning, safety deposit box, hairdryer, and mini-bar. The hotel sits in gardens filled with bougainvillea and citrus trees, and there is a delightful little bar where guests can relax with a cool glass of wine after a long day of sightseeing and exploring the countryside.
This hotel in the Messina province of Sicily is 50 metres from the main street in Lipari town centre, and just 300 metres from the city's port. Lipari is the largest Aeolian Island and it has a complex and fascinating history. The town's San Bartholomew cathedral dates back as far as 1134 and there are also the remains of an ancient Greek acropolis, upon which the Spanish built a fortress in 1556. The people of Lipari take their food and wine very seriously, and visitors should not leave without sampling the locally-produced Malvasia wine and sweet pastries such as nacatuli and spicchitedda. If visitors can tear themselves away from Lipari's legendary hospitality and lovely beaches, there are ferries which leave the port regularly for Sicily and the other Aeolian Islands.
