A small volcanic island in Italy's Tyrrhenian Sea, 25km north of Sicily and the most southerly of the Aeolian islands. Myth has it that the Greek wind god Aeolus have lived on this island, then called Hiera. Today the island has three volcanic centres, starting with the old stratovolcano cones of Monte Aria, Monte Saraceno and Monte Luccia in the south. The most recently active part of the island is the Gran Cratere atop the Fossa Cone in the middle of the island. This has yielded seven major eruptions in the last six thousand years. Finally there is the 123m high Vulcanello, once a separate islet, but now connected to the rest of Vulcano by a narrow isthmus. This thrust up from the sea during the eruption of 183BC. It became joined to Vulcano during the 1550 eruption, which threw up the isthmus. The island has been quiet since the Fossa Cone eruption of 3 August 1888 (to 1890).

The island has fewer than 500 permanent residents and is a few minutes hydrofoil hop from Lipari. As well as hotels and cafes, it has the superb beaches, hot springs and sulphur mud baths.
