Hotel Paradise Beach Resort, Selinunte
Contrada Belice Di Mare, CastelvetranoThis three-star modern beach resort hotel is extremely near the famous ruins at Selinunte, on the southern coast of Sicily, and so offers something to keep everyone happy - both culture and relaxation in the Mediterranean. Selinunte itself was called Selinus by the Greeks, and was famously attacked by Hannibal (of elephant fame) with battering rams. There are no less than eight ruined temples here, which are thought to have been destroyed by a succession of earthquakes. Today Selinunte is a magical, silent place, overgrown with acanthus and wild celery plants (from which it takes its name) but it was once one of the greatest cities of the ancient civilised world. Venturing further afield, good day trips would include Mazara del Vallo, once one of the main Saracen strongholds in Sicily, or Marsala, home of the famous wine industry, not to mention some fine baroque architecture.
The Hotel Paradise Beach Resort has 248 large rooms, which offer all modern comforts, such as air-conditioning (scheduled from the hotel), direct-dial telephones, satellite television and electronic safes. There's an excellent restaurant with a buffet service, which offers high-quality, varied dishes, both Sicilian and international. This hotel is definitely one for sports enthusiasts - there's windsurfing, sailing and canoeing, as well as two swimming pools, tennis courts, volleyball, table tennis and mini golf. The lively entertainment team aims to keep everyone happy and busy with activities all day long, there are shops where you can buy local specialities, and transport to the airport can be arranged.
