Località Monteluco 19, SpoletoThe Hotel Paradiso, Spoleto - set in a superb natural park, amidst centuries-old oak trees, this Spoleto hotel enjoys a setting so peaceful it takes the breath away. The ancient Umbrian hilltown of Spoleto dates back to the Romans at least, and is probably older still. There is a host of sights to see, from ancient and medieval times. The Roman theatre has been largely rebuilt, while the Ponte Sanguinario (or 'bloody bridge') dates from the first century BC. A second Roman amphitheatre dates from the second century AD, and was in the Middle Ages used as storage and shops. There is the 13th century Palazzo Comunale and the Ponte delle Torri - an aqueduct from the same era, but probably on Roman foundations. See too the 14th century Rocca Albornoziana, formerly the seat of the city governor and latterly the town jail. There are 20 or more fine churches dating from very early times (the fourth century Basilica of San Salvatore) through the Middle Ages and beyond. This Spoleto hotel makes a superb base from which to explore.
