The sleepy fishing village has surprisingly good transport links, with trains running regularly from both Genoa and Pisa. It is in an ideal spot for visiting the stunning coastline of the Cinque Terre and the five villages it is named after: Monterosso, Vernazza Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore.

One of the best ways to see them is from the sea (apart from Corniglia, which doesn't have a harbour), and you can pick up a boat from any of the four stops. Alternatively, hikers may prefer to take the 11km Blue Trail (Sentiero Azzurro) from Riomaggiore to Monterosso, which offers spectacular coastal scenery. The nearby town of Levanto is also worth a look with its 13th century architectural remains, such as its crumbling town walls, the Loggia Communale and the black-and-white striped church of Sant'Andrea.
