Hotel Picchio Nero, near Potenza
This family-run hotel offers its guests the rare opportunity of staying in Terranova di Pollino, deep in the Pollino National Park (Parco Nazionale del Pollino), Italy's largest protected area of mountain and forest. With relatively few visitors, you'll be able to enjoy this unique conservation area, and all the nature within it, such as rare species of plants and animals, in relative peace and quiet. Also nearby is the impressive Parco Lucano, and the Ionian Sea is also accessible for those who fancy a day at the beach. On the cultural side, Policoro and Metaponto both boast some intriguing museums and the Carlo Levi literary museum is a particular highlight of the area.
The managers of Hotel Picchio Nero, whose name means 'The Black Woodpecker', have been honing their hospitality for over a third of a century. When the Golia-Genovese family first set up its facility it had just two rooms and four restaurant tables. Today, this three-star residence has grown to reach 25 rooms, losing none of its traditional charm or family feel in the process. All of the rooms come with private bathroom, a colour television and individual heating. Many also have balconies, giving fantastic views of the verdant surroundings. Breakfast is included with the cost of your room.
There are plenty of places to relax on site, including a lounge, bar, garden and outdoor play area, which makes Hotel Picchio Nero a good choice for families. Business travellers have access to photocopying facilities and there is a car park which is free for guests.
