Hotel Pithaecusa, Ischia
Once an essential stopover on the Grand Tour, Casamicciola Terme on the north coast of Ischia is renowned for its healing thermal waters. One of the oldest established hotels in the area, Hotel Pithaecusa is named after the Greek name for the island. It makes a fantastic base for guests who want to visit the spa, and provides a free shuttle bus there and back. The hotel is also a brief walk away from the harbour and beach.
Located in a quiet part of the town, this three-star hotel has a swimming pool with hydromassage and a sun terrace. In the restaurant guests can taste a variety of traditional Italian cuisine, which is all freshly made with local produce. Satellite television, a bathroom, telephone, hairdryer and ceiling fan are provided in the rooms, and some have air conditioning and balconies with spectacular sea views.
A charming small town to the west of Ischia Porto, the main town on the island of Ischia, Casamicciola Terme is convenient both for visiting Ischia Porto and Ischia Ponte and the island's attractions further afield. At Lacco Ameno, the Museo Archeologico di Pithecusae contains Nestor's Cup, inscribed with what is thought to be the oldest writing in existence, while the Villa La Colombaia is a cultural centre and museum. In Forio, the La Mortella garden created for British composer William Walton is one of the island's main tourist sights. Another major tourist draw is the Aragonese Castle (Castello Aragonese) which dates from 474BC.
