Hotel Pop, Cala Gonone

The marvellously named Hotel Pop, in Cala Gonone. Lying on Piazza Porto, just 100 metres from the beach and 20 metres from the nearest diving centre, this Sardinian hotel could hardly be better situated in the splendid west coast resort. The hotel has a gorgeous terrace with sea views and an award winning restaurant.

Lying in Nuoro province, Cala Gonone is a lovely little place. Towering above the town are 900-metre high mountains. Once accessible only by boat, Cala Gonone retains some of its sense of isolation (though with modern hotels and restaurants you're far from cut off from civilisation!) There are some great beaches, and you must head up and down the coast for some lovely and secluded little strands. Cala Luna and Cala Sisine are recommended.

The coastline is pitted with grottoes too, including the Grotta del Bue Marino, one of the last habitats of the Mediterranean monk seal (or 'sea ox'). Inland we have the national park, the Parco Nazionale del Golfo di Orosei e dei Gennargentu, and south of Cala Gonone runs the unspoiled valley of the River Flumineddu and the soaring Supramonte massif mountains.
