Hotel President, Marsala
This large modern three-star hotel is located in Marsala, on the western coast of Sicily, in the Trapani region, and just 2km from the Mediterranean. Marsala is well known for its wine industry, started by an Englishman, John Woodhouse, at the end of the 18th century (he had already pioneered a similar wine, port, in Portugal. Marsala has an appealing historic centre, high on Baroque charm - visit the cathedral to see a collection of beautiful Flemish tapestries commissioned by Philip II of Spain. Nor should you miss the wine baglios (warehouses) along the quay, where you can taste the delicious rich, sweet drink and buy it at reasonable prices. Marsala is also well placed for beaches, and for day trips to the ancient sites at Selinunte, Segesta and Mozia. North of Marsala is the famous Salt Road, a pretty tourist route that follows the coast, dotted with windmills. Salt has been collected here for centuries, and the white of the dunes contrasts beautifully with the deep-blue sky in summer.
Marsala's Hotel President occupies a modern, functional building, surrounded by palm trees. The air-conditioned rooms are decorated in modern, bright colours and contain telephones, televisions and refrigerated minibars. Outside is a large swimming pool, lit up at night; inside you'll find a sunbed. There is an impressive restaurant which serves both local Sicilian and international dishes, and also piano and American bars for further entertainment. Business travellers are well served with large reception rooms and meeting rooms. There is private parking in the garage and Trapani Birgi airport is just 15km away.
