Hotel Punta Scario, Malfa, on Isola Di Salina. This beautiful Salina hotel occupies a breathtaking clifftop location on this, one of the loveliest of the very lovely Aeolian Islands.

The second biggest of the Aeolian Islands, the volcanic chain that sits just off the northern coast of Sicily, Salina comprises six inactive volcanoes. This is the most fertile of the Aeolian isles, growing grapes for the Malvasia wine, capers and caperberries. Settlement dates back to the Bronze Age and is centred on the major towns of Santa Marina, Malfa and Leni. Today there are some 2300 people living on Salina (you may recognise it from the 1994 movie 'Il Postino'). Like the rest of the islands, Salina has a turbulent history, much invaded and most devastatingly so by Barbarossa in 1554 - in the course of the battles between the French and the Ottomans on Spain, the island was completely depopulated. The late Middle Ages saw Salina repopulated by settlers from Sicily, Spain and mainland Italy.
