The little Italian Adriatic town of Cervia has a remarkable history, buffeted like so much of northern and central Italy by endless internecine wars during the Middle Ages, it rose to become remarkably economically important. The reason why is on display in the town's Museum of Salt: it's not a promising sounding place for a day out, but the Museo is fascinating. The town was originally Ficocle, a Greek settlement midway between present day Cervia and Ravenna, but was sacked and rebuilt on the 'Salina', the salt pans which run out to sea. The whole town was rebuilt once more by Pope Innocent XII in 1697. Cervia gets a mention in Dante's 'Divine Comedy' as 'sheltering beneath the wing of Ravenna', one of the great poet's many wry looks at medieval Italian realpolitik. Other sights in the town include the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, built between 1699 and 1702, the St Michael Tower and the Palazzo Comunale.
