Hotel Reggio, Reggio Emilia
Right in the historical heart of Reggio nell'Emilia, the Hotel Reggio provides three-star comfort in this historic Emilia-Romagna town. Set on Via San Giuseppe, it has just 16 quiet and spacious rooms, all with bathroom with shower, satellite television, air conditioning and cooking facilities. A 'satellite' to the Hotel Posta (just 100 metres away) it shares all the facilities of the larger hotel, while offering pleasantly peaceful accommodation.
This is the perfect base for exploring this historic northern Italy city, which first came to life as a stopping point on the ancient Via Emilia, the highway built by the Romans and still used to this day. With a cobbled central area around the twin squares of the Piazza Prampolini and the Piazza San Prospero, you'll find that cycles are the perfect way to explore the city.
Important sights include the tenth century Basilica di San Prospero, and the cathedral or 'Duomo'. Il Duomo, dating from the 9th-12th centuries, though extensively rebuilt during the 1500s, has paintings within by Guercino, Alessandro Tiarini and Palma the Younger. There is the Galleria Parmeggiani with its fine collection of Flemish, Spanish and Italian paintings and sculpture; and some important baroque churches, including the Basilica della Ghiara and Christ's Oratory.
This region of Emilia-Romagna also boasts some of Italy's finest (and certainly richest) cuisine (think of Parma's ham and cheese, and the balsamic vinegar from Modena just down the road). You'll find excellent local restaurants in which to enjoy the food and pile on the calories.
