Hotel Relais Antiche Saline, Nubia
This atmospheric four-star hotel is located between Trapani and Marsala, in the centre of the Salinas Nature Reserve, home to many rare birds and a paradise for nature lovers. It's a beautiful setting for this historic building, recently restored but once owned by a famous Trapani family, and watching the sun set over the bay, drink in hand, is a truly magical experience. Salt has been central to this area for centuries; it's worth a visit to the local salt museum to find out more about the history of the industry, while the Salt Road is a delightful tourist route to follow along the coast. Other places to visit in this western part of Sicily include the Egadi islands, which can be seen in the distance from the hotel itself, or the ancient sites at Segesta and Erice. Marsala, the home of the wine industry, would also make a good day trip - make sure to bring a bottle of the strong sweet drink back as a souvenir.
The Hotel Relais Antiche Saline Nubia is as white as the salt dunes themselves, with doors painted the strong blue of the sky - a fresh colour scheme which is continued in the bedrooms. The latter feature air conditioning, satellite television and direct-dial telephones: very modern comforts, despite the historic associations of the building. There is a pleasant, airy restaurant which serves delicious local dishes and wines, while outside you will find a swimming pool, an outdoor play area and a free car park.
