Over five years, the owners have carefully restored and reawakened the antique beauty of this building and the surrounding 'borgo'. Tradition has been carefully respected, with work on the stone facade, the roof beams within, cotto pavements and fireplaces of serena stone. Step outside, and little alleyways lead from the farm buildings to the pool, a 17th century arcade and a centuries-old well in the courtyard.

The scenery of this part of central Italy is simply lovely, and you can get right into the heart of things, hiring one of the hotel's mountain bikes or taking a horse out. Just 4km from here (about 2.5 miles) you'll find historic Cortona, the walled hill town clinging tenaciously to the sheer slopes of Monte Sant'Edigio. The streets climb steeply to the peak (and oldest part) of the town, and you'll enjoy superb views of the Valdichiana (valley), Lake Trasimeno and the mountains around Siena. Beneath you, the cultivated terraces have olive groves and vineyards, dropping to the valley floor.
