Hotel Relais Palazzo di Luglio, near Arezzo

Fraz. Cignano, 35, Sansepolcro Arezzo

Palazzo di Luglio Relais is 3km outside the historic town of Sansepolcro, in the heart of Tuscany. This splendid Italian hotel has a suitably grand location, atop a hill overlooking the Tiberina Valley. The four-star accommodation comprises a main building and four annexes - a collection of beautifully restored stone buildings with red terracotta tiled roofs, exposed brickwork and beams. This is probably exactly what you picture when you visualise Tuscany and Umbria in fact.

And the setting complements the historic buildings, with 12 hectares of olive groves and a mature park. This very relaxing accommodation is the perfect base for your explorations of the art, landscape, history, terrific cuisine and wine of the Tiberina Valley. The main building contains the reception, sitting rooms, wine cellar, bar and (on the upper floor) suites and bedrooms. The restaurant is the place to enjoy the typical fruits of this Tuscan valley, including white truffles, ovoli mushrooms, home-made pasta with porcini, and of course fine wines from Chianti. Enjoy home-made cakes and pastries, vin santo, salami and pork dishes - the delicious menu goes on, and the estate has its own olive oil press, producing extra virgin DOC oil.

Rooms and suites are air conditioned, with bathroom, TV and safe. Nearby sights include Sansepolcro itself, its 'centro storico' dating from around 1400 and enclosed in defensive walls a century later. These defences were built by the great Renaissance sculptor, architect and military engineer, Giuliano da Sangallo, architect to the Medicis in Florence. Also see Piero della Francesca's 'Resurrection' hanging in the museum here. It was dubbed by Aldous Huxley 'the greatest painting in the world'.
