And there is so much to see nearby. The thirteenth-century Castello di Sarre is perhaps the best of the castles in the Valle d'Aosta. Easily accessed by bus, it is a short walk through apple orchards, what were once fertile hunting grounds for King Vittorio Emanuele II who bought the castle. Established as a hunting lodge, it still retains much of its stuffed bounty, including the mounted head of an ibex, the first slain by the king. Also well worth a visit for both its live animals and beautiful scenery is Italy's national park, the Parco Nazionale di Gran Paradiso. Here, amongst the alpine flowers and snow-topped mountains, you might be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of circling golden eagles or ibex and chamois who live most of the year above the treeline, only coming down in the winter and spring.
