And it's well worth taking the time to explore this large, yet sparsely populated island from your hotel on Sardinia. There are the mysterious 'nuraghi', neolithic buildings that are the only remnant of the civilisation swept aside by the Romans. There is the old Roman and Carthaginian town and remains at Nora, the old town of Cagliari and the vast cave of Tiscali, housing the remains of a complete prehistoric village.
