A very ancient town, Perugia long predates the Romans, who invaded around the year 310BC. The city was one of the original 12 towns of the Etruscan Federation in fact, and boasts a wealth of architecture from antiquity through to the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Fine municipal buildings such as the Palazzo dei Priori and the aqueduct that spans the city streets are complemented by some important churches. Not least among them the Church of San Severo, with its fresco by Raphael and Perugino (the medieval master was a son of the town). See too the Church of Santa Giuliana, the Templar church of San Bevignate and the Cathedral of S. Lorenzo. A visit to the botanic gardens is a must, as is the Etruscan arch. This is a city where antiquity forms part of the fabric of everyday life, a city of remarkable beauty. This Perugia hotel is perfect for town and country.
