Enna itself is a quite remarkable location. Historically known as the 'navel' of the Sicily, lying as it does at the geographical dead centre of the island, it was a prized strategic point in antiquity. It sits atop a flat-topped hill, with steep wooded sides - perfect defence against the predations of invading armies. The ancient town is mentioned in the writings of Pliny and Cicero, though the heart of the town today is resolutely medieval, with a collection of fine churches, palazzi, a duomo, museums and a (recently opened) university. Pergusa sits close to Lago Pergusa, at the foot of the hill.
