It's been much invaded down the centuries of course, and the towns (and languages) bear the influences of the Spanish, Normans, Greeks, Arabs, Genoese and many others. Earlier still was the neolithic Nuraghic civilisation, whose remains are seen in the thousands of mysterious 'Nuraghe' - beehive shaped stone towers that pepper the island. There are superb beaches and a largely unpopulated hinterland of green hills, mountains and national parks.
