You are just on the edge of the tight, concentric circle of medieval streets that makes up the heart of Modena here. The city has existed since ancient times, there is evidence of an Iron Age settlement, and it was an important strategic point on the Via Aemilia in Roman times (the line of the road still links Rimini in the east through Bologna, Modena and Parma). Modena reached another height under the Dukes of Este during the Middle Ages, and the very fine Romanesque Cathedral is evidence of its power at the time. The city has excellent churches and museums: the latter in the superb Museums Palace/Palazzo dei Musei.
