Hotel San Francisco, Cala Gonone

Via Magellano 8, Cala Gonone

Cala Gonone is a little seaside town on the eastern coast of Sardinia, with the glittering blue waters of the Mediterranean to one side, and the green slopes of the national park (Parco Naturale del Golfo di Orosei e dei Gennargentu) to the other. The Hotel San Francisco occupies a superb position, between sea and mountains and just 50 metres from the beach.

This is recently built accommodation, constructed by the family which for many years has run the neighbouring San Francisco restaurant. There are just 14 rooms here, all superbly furnished with marble floors, private terrace or balcony, and all with air conditioning, minibar, satellite TV and bathroom. Rooms also have telephone and range from double to quadruple - so ideal for family vacations on Sardinia. This Cala Gonone hotel has facilities for guests with limited mobility. Please note that there is no internet access here (a blessing in disguise maybe?), no parking and no pets are permitted. Just peace and quiet on this gorgeous stretch of Italian Mediterranean coast.

If you can tear yourself away from the beach and the restaurant next door, you'll find plenty to occupy you in Sardinia. There are water sports galore on this stretch of coast and of course you have the mountains and national parkland to discover. It's quite beautiful, and Sardinia also has a burgeoning winter sports scene. There are historic towns in the shape of Cagliari, Nuoro, Oristano and Sassari. And of course there is the long and rich history of this ancient island - nowhere evidenced more dramatically and mysteriously than in the Nuraghe, the enormous stone beehive buildings dating from neolithic times, thousands of which pepper the island.
