Hotel San Giuan, Alghero - this charming little three star hotel is very close to the town centre and just 50 metres from the beach. This is a terrific position, offering the best of both worlds. Alghero has delightfully over the top baroque churches, narrow cobbled streets and wrought iron balconies overlooking them in the old town.

Sights and sites include the Cathedral of St Mary, a Catalan Gothic construction begun in 1570 and subsequently suffering a 20th century neoclassical reworking. Check out the Churches of St Francis and St Michael, the Torre del Portal, the Madonna del Santo Rosario and the 16th century Palazzo D'Albis. Head south out of Alghero and there is medieval Bosa, the beautiful marine reserve, Neptune's Grotto, and a host of activities, including caving, climbing, bird watching and diving.

Very popular with UK visitors, Alghero has managed to be unspoiled by its status as one of Sardinia's premier resorts. It's still a buzzing town in its own right, with a thriving fishing port. And like all of Sardinia it is a glorious mix of cultures and influences, with as much a Spanish flavour as one of Italy.
