The Hotel San Luca Palace in Lucca - set within the defensive walls of the city, this Lucca hotel is beautifully situated on Via San Paolino, in the western end of the 'centro storico'. Walking is by far the best way to see this lovely old Tuscan city (or by bike as many people do), and you are within easy reach of the major sights here. The Duomo di San Martino, the Piazza dell'Antifeatre. Piazza Napoleone and Piazza San Michele, the Museo Nazionale di Villa Guinigi, and of course the walls themselves ... all are within striking distance.

But a long day's walking and sightseeing demands a luxurious berth in which to relax and recover. There are also meeting rooms (and there is internet connectivity throughout) making this a very nice alternative for business gatherings. This Lucca hotel is just 700 metres from the town's railway station, so you can quickly be out at the Versilian coast with its seaside resorts, at Pisa airport, or indeed exploring the neighbouring art cities of Florence, Pisa and Siena.

For now though, enjoy Lucca. A promenade along the top of the 4km defensive walls is a joy, and a great way to orientate yourself and pick out landmarks within the town. Built as a defence against warring neighbours Florence in the 16th and 17th century, they were never tested in battle. Today though, they are a much loved resource for the Lucchese - cyclists, joggers and those taking the passegiata love the walls of Lucca.
